IRB Round 3 Post 3 (Time)

Smart Phones For Soldiers.

This article talks about how the US Army is considering making smart phones, such as the IPhone, Droid, Blackberry, etc, standard issue for soldiers. Not only would this decrease the weight per load out, but it would also be a more efficient means with which to provide soldiers with up to the minute intel. I am a big supporter of this idea, I feel that smart phones are a great way to help soldiers on the battlefield. It has a lot of potential, such as locating MIA units, or relaying information! What do you think?

  1. Kevin you took the words right out of my mouth. Smart phones are a great way to communicate. This would really help them. Technology is important in this day and age. I'm shocked they haven't done this years ago.

  2. um... I guess it would be nice...
I obviously don't know enough about what soldiers face, so can't comment on whether they would appreciate the extra hassle on the battlefield - remember, maps don't need batteries - and how long do smart phone batteries last when actively being used? Oh, and about them getting intell - isn't that what two way radios and headsets are for? I think that even if the signals would be encrypted, it would be far too easy to spy, jam, or otherwise interfere with communications. Then again, I am just speculating with very little actual facts to back my opinions.
